Promenade in Nieuwpoort damaged by weight of fire truck

The Nieuwpoort fire brigade rushed out yesterday to rescue a drowning person from the harbor channel. To get to the scene as quickly as possible, the fire brigade drove over the wooden promenade. However, it turned out not to be able to withstand the weight of the fire truck. Several planks have bent or collapsed. After the high tourist season, the city is looking at when and how the promenade can be restored. In the meantime, walkers and cyclists must take an alternative route between the fish market and the seawall.
