Professionals who fled the Ukraine train at BVB with – football – sport

Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund has allowed two footballers from the war zone in Ukraine to keep fit in training. Raymond Frimpong Owusu and Alan Aussi are the names of the two professionals who will take part in the U23s and player replacement training in Dortmund until the end of the season. On Monday they were on the pitch with BVB stars like Erling Haaland and Giovanni Reyna.

Owusu: “It’s crazy”

The just 19-year-old Owusu was last under contract with the first division club Zorya Lugansk. The Ghanaian even played in the Europa Conference League. A few days after the start of the war he fled from eastern Ukraine to Poland. He got in touch with Dortmund through his player agent.

Donetsk-born central defender Alan Aussi, who was on loan from Dinamo Kyiv’s second team to NK Veres Rivne in western Ukraine this season, also trains with the Dortmund sub-team.

On Monday, the duo took part in player replacement training for the BVB pros for the first time. An unreal situation for Owusu, as he told the “Ruhr Nachrichten”: “The escape was two weeks ago. And now I’m training here at Borussia Dortmund and took a photo with Erling Haaland after training. That’s crazy.”

No BVB obligation of the two refugees

World governing body FIFA had decided that foreign players’ contracts with Ukrainian clubs would be automatically suspended until the end of the season. They are therefore considered without a contract until the end of the season and can therefore also complete training with a Bundesliga club.

However, according to the report, the club does not want to sign either of the two professionals. Dortmund only supports training so that the escaped players can stay in shape. In the summer one hopes that they can play at their clubs again or find new ones.
