Former Tour de France winner Geraint Thomas has won the Tour of Switzerland for the first time in his career.

With second place in the final individual time trial in Vaduz, the Welshman edged out Colombian Sergio Higuita from the German Bora-hansgrohe team from first place in the overall standings.

Evenepoel wins time trial

The young Belgian star Remco Evenepoel won the fight against the clock over 25.6 kilometers with a lead of three seconds, while the German road champion Max Schachmann finished sixth.

Thomas can also hope for a successful Tour de France. The 36-year-old won the Tour of France in 2018 and finished second overall a year later. A good omen for the Ineos captain: Before his tour triumph in 2018, he had also had a successful dress rehearsal by winning the Dauphine tour. Behind Thomas, Higuita and the Dane Jakob Fuglsang took second and third place overall.

Many corona cases

The Tour de Suisse was overshadowed by numerous Corona cases. Finally, the three-time road bike world champion Peter Sagan, who had tested positive for Corona for the third time in 18 months, was also hit. Before Sagan, who won the third stage of the Tour of Switzerland, more than 40 drivers had already had to end the race because of the corona wave.
