Product Week: Men’s Shorts

What is it:

One item that had a notable presence on the SS23 catwalks were shorts. Men’s shorts, to be precise, which could be seen in a large number of variants and did not have a uniform shape. Instead, they often stood as a statement in full outfits or as alternative bottoms to standard looks like two-piece suits. There was also no clear distinction between formal and casual attire, both appearing on the runway in different variations. Men’s shorts are often reserved for warmer temperatures, but their place in current fashion seems to be blurring these once-dividing lines and bringing the year-round look into play.

Why you should order them:

Men’s shorts are an obvious choice for the summer wardrobe. They represent an alternative to long pants and can offer some comfort in the warmer months. Men’s shorts often fall into the sportswear category, such as basketball-inspired styles that can now be worn as everyday wear. These styles often have a roomier fit than the average short, allowing for more room to move. Many men are also opting for swim shorts, which can be worn both on the street and as beachwear, giving them an effortless wardrobe staple for the holiday season. Most men’s shorts are practical and offer a cooler option for summer while still providing the desired comfort.

Where we saw them:

As already mentioned, men’s shorts were a distinct element of the S/S23 catwalks. They appeared in numerous collections in different shapes and colors. Moschino and Family First, for example, presented knee-length shorts as part of matching suit sets that represented a new twist on formal wear. Bianca Saunders, on the other hand, stuck close to casualwear, showing surfer-inspired designs with colorful prints, as did Dsquared2, who took inspiration from roomy basketball shorts for their Jamaican-inspired collection. Fendi showed denim shorts with brushed hems and Prada presented a selection of cropped leather shorts that matched shirts with graphic prints.

How to style them:

Take inspiration from the catwalks and combine the shorts with a matching top in the same fabric and print. The overall look is an effortless yet stylish outfit for summer that pairs easily with a pair of casual sneakers. Or you can play with prints and use a contrasting print with the shorts to create something playful and daring.

Shorts can be worn with a variety of tops: the safest is an oversized, baggy t-shirt, perfect for beach days and everyday wear. However, if you want to dress up the look a bit, following Prada’s examples, reach for an oversized button-up shirt and jacket for a more formal attire.

While men’s shorts may not suit every customer, there is a huge range of styles on the market – in different materials and fits – to appeal to a wider audience. Their practical use in the warmer months cannot be overstated, as they provide a cooler option for men’s everyday wardrobe when temperatures rise.
