Product of the week: the singlet

What is it:

A singlet usually refers to a sleeveless top. Despite its simplicity, the silhouette was undoubtedly one of the most popular in menswear’s SS24 collections. While the look was initially associated with the undergarment category, typically worn under work clothes in the early 19th century, it eventually found its way into sportswear in the second half of the century to improve athletes’ freedom of movement. The garment later entered the fashion world and was worn by rock musicians and men in the 1970s and 80s. Today, the singlet is gender-neutral in its shape and is an absolute must for every wardrobe.

Why you should order it:

For SS24, the singlet was a standout piece of clothing, seen in a variety of prints, materials and colors, showcasing the wide range of variations in which it is now available. The piece itself is popular with both men and women as an effortless outfit alternative for warm days or as a piece that can be easily combined with other pieces. Since it is gender neutral in most cases, there are also fewer restrictions placed on the top, allowing it to appeal to a wider audience and push boundaries.

Where we saw it:

The singlet appeared in various styles in the men’s fashion collections for the coming season. Simple versions of the undershirt were seen at Givenchy, Rick Owens and Junya Watanabe, each limited to black and white colors. However, knitted singlets were particularly popular on the catwalks, either in a fluffy mohair look like at Wales Bonner, in diamond knit at Lgn Louis Gabriel Nouchi or in mesh technology, like at Fendi. Others took more experimental forms. While Lazoschmidl presented cut-out, swimwear-like pieces, Botter showed an undershirt that appeared to resemble the texture of a braided construction.

How to style it:

A singlet can be worn as a standalone item, but layering it makes it much more interesting and adds some depth to the outfit. An example of such a technique is using a knit tank over a shirt, which can be further enhanced with a scarf or tie to complete the outfit. A button-up made of a flowing material is the perfect complement to the singlet and offers the ideal solution for cooler spring days.

The singlet, with all its history, has become a modern garment that cannot be missing in the wardrobes of men and women. In addition to its runway prominence, the look offers customers an effortless piece of clothing to suit their summer needs.
