Product of the week: the organza look

What is it:

The organza trend, or transparent trend, has recently become a fixture in fashion. Many designers have embraced the look with oversized silhouettes and gravity-defying shapes. The look can be seen on both blouses and dresses. Many brands are taking the style to dramatic heights, incorporating puff sleeves and oversized skirts into their designs. Another often seen variant is the use of contrasting materials, such as dresses made of heavy velvet in combination with flowing organza sleeves. Many fashion houses are also experimenting with mesh design, incorporating opulent embellishments or intricate embroidery into the materials, creating an intriguing layering effect over simpler undergarments.

Why you should order it:

The organza look easily transitions from day to evening wear, offering customers a piece that is a good investment and can be worn again and again. While some brands are taking this trend more towards fashion statement pieces, others are taking a safer approach for those who care about fashion but want a more wearable piece. This means that there is a wide range of transparent designs, suitable for different audiences, each offering different ways of embracing this trend.

Where we saw it:

For FW22, Alexander McQueen upped the drama with a ruched mesh dress that stood out from the array of neon tones and contrasting materials seen throughout the collection. The house offered similar sheer pieces for its SS22 collection, including a layered mesh skirt and a structured two-piece suit heavily embellished with lace. Cecilie Bahnsen also embraced the sheer look for FW22 with dresses that were gathered and layered at various points, resulting in oversized, asymmetric silhouettes. Simone Rocha in particular put this dramatic trend on the trend radar, showcasing puffy, oversized dresses season after season that gained cult status and garnered a loyal following behind her eponymous brand. Many of her designs are inspired by historical figures, brought to life through intricate embroidery and embellishments.

How to style it:

For an everyday look, combine an organza blouse with high-waisted jeans or tapered trousers to create an elegant everyday outfit that can be worn in almost all seasons. If you plan to wear it in the colder months, team it with a cardigan and long-sleeved coat to stay warm even when you’re outdoors. If the design is a blouse, you can elevate the look by pairing it with either a fitted skirt or, for the bolder customers, pants with a roomy silhouette to play with shape and texture. If it is a dress, transform it with boots and simple accessories into an evening wear that is suitable for any occasion.

The sheer or organza look has played a big role on the runways for the coming season and is popular as a statement style for both warmer weather and evening wear. It makes a sweet addition to a collection designed to inspire customers to play with textures and their personal style, and to experiment within their comfort zone.
