Product of the week: The colorful fake fur coat

What is it:

The faux fur coat is often both a fashion statement and a political message. The modern faux fur we know today didn’t appear until the mid-1950s, coinciding with the development of acrylic fibers. While faux fur’s origins stem less from compassion for animals and more from the need for rapid production methods, the material is now touted as an animal-friendly alternative to real fur. So the faux fur coat could now be seen as an integral part of a woman’s wardrobe. As perceptions of real fur are changing, designers are increasingly using the material in place of traditional animal-based variants.

Why you want to order it:

More and more labels and fashion houses are doing without the production of real animal fur, such as Moncler and the Kering Group recently, a step that is apparently well received by customers. Additionally, brands have increasingly shifted to producing more sustainable, eco-friendly faux fur to meet consumer demand, which has helped the model’s popularity continue to grow in recent years. These continuous developments have put the faux fur coat back in the limelight as an animal and environmentally friendly alternative to the previously coveted fur jacket. The pops of color seen in the designs are also supported by the color trends predicted for the upcoming season. Pantone predicts a range of bold, eye-catching colors that will take center stage.

Where we saw him:

The faux fur coat has been spotted on several runways over the past few fashion weeks, often seen in bold colors and oversized silhouettes. This suggests that the model will have a strong presence in the FW22 season. The increasing popularity of bright colors was very present on the Fall/Winter 22 season catwalks. A large number of designers opted for the colorful fake fur coat. Alberta Ferretti, Versace and Emporio Armani brought the faux fur coat to life with contrasting patterns reminiscent of vintage designs, while Michael Kors stuck to monochromatic, albeit bright, colors for its over-the-top coats. Some designers took inspiration from animals for their creations, including Yuhan Wang, who presented a leopard print look, and Christian Siriano, who used a blue zebra print for his long-sleeved coat. Bluemarine and Dolce & Gabbana were also fans of faux fur coats this season. They each sported exaggerated silhouettes in bold colors, making a statement in their own aesthetic.

How to style it:

While the faux fur coat is a statement in itself, the styling variations can be bold and match the coat’s striking look. For a bold outfit, pair the coat with a flowy, patterned midi dress and low-heeled ankle boots, the color scheme of which is inspired by the garment’s light hue. If you prefer trousers, opt for flared trousers and a patterned shirt to put together a look reminiscent of the 70s. If daring isn’t your thing, opt for a simpler, universal look that shows that a statement piece can also be a less edgy addition to a wardrobe. A pair of simple jeans and a sweater or cardigan make for a no-fuss everyday outfit for those who want to stay in their comfort zone. Another element that is increasingly coming to the fore are accessories, such as bags that match the faux fur coat, be it the same material, color or pattern. A fun addition to your look would be to mix and match the pieces to present a playful twist on the trend.
