Product of the week: The checked sweater

What is it:

The checked sweater is an important companion for the autumn/winter season. This is also reflected in the fact that it plays an important role on the catwalks and in the collections of the coming months. The check pattern itself has a long, rich history and is associated with a number of notable fashion houses, most notably Burberry, which has long incorporated the famous pattern into the lining of its signature trench coats. Now the brand has joined others in taking this heritage look to other outerwear pieces, bringing it back to life in a rejuvenated form to make this heritage print palatable to younger generations.

Why you should order it:

With these adjustments come new and updated versions of the classic check, in bolder colors and with revised patterns that make the style appealing to new customers. The sweater as a single piece is particularly suitable for autumn/winter as an additional layer and is therefore appropriate for the season and a good investment for the wardrobe. Such a style cannot be fixed to a specific target group. The look appeals to audiences of all ages, also with the refreshed look of the plaid making it interesting for many people.

where we have seen him before:

The check pattern was a popular pattern in the AW23 season, appearing in a number of collections in the form of coats, dresses and trousers. However, it was particularly noticeable with sweaters and pullovers, which were shown by designers as eye-catching winter clothing for the colder months. While Maison Margiela’s collection featured contrasting patches and fringes, Christian Dior’s sweaters were given boxy silhouettes with distressed checks. Daniel Lee’s Burberry debut in London saw the designer harken back to the brand’s British roots, with checks and plaids running throughout the collection, including a range of jumpers.

How to style it:

There are many ways to combine the plaid sweater, from a simple top and jeans to more outlandish variations for fashion-conscious people. The model was a regular on the runways in bold combinations, using the check pattern throughout the outfit, paired with a matching jumper and trousers or skirt. In other cases, it has been paired with an A-line midi skirt or chinos, showing just how versatile the garment really is and the wide range of uses it has for different consumers.

This season’s checked sweater brings a historic classic back to life through modernized prints, reinvigorating the look and increasing its allure. Whilst the sweater itself is a staple of the Autumn/Winter collection, the use of checks gives the garment a fresh twist, making it a wardrobe must-have for the colder months.
