Product of the week: The cami dress

What is it:

The cami dress, which can also be referred to as the slip dress, is a casualwear trend that has been making the rounds in recent years. The trend itself harks back to 1990s fashion and is particularly popular in summer as an easy-to-throw outfit – but layering keeps it relevant year-round. The cami dress, the name is derived from camisole, is a loose-fitting dress that used to be worn as an undergarment. Today it has been adapted to modern fashion to be worn as a day dress. It comes in a variety of lengths, from a mini silhouette to a floor-length maxi dress.

Why you should order it:

This understated garment has become a staple in womenswear, offering customers an easy option for warmer days. It’s especially relevant right now, with younger women getting interested in the trends of the past, including the ’90s, which is where this dress comes from. The simple design also allows you to easily style the look and adapt it to your personal taste. There are many ways to wear the dress in other seasons as well.

Where we saw it:

On the women’s fashion runways, the cami dress varied drastically between designers. While Wales Bonner opted for chunky knits, Fendi used sheer, floaty fabrics with subtle gathering and ruffles to adapt the silhouette. Jacquemus also stuck to more delicate shapes, but instead used ruffles and adjustable straps to modernize the shape. Bottega Veneta showed more glamorous cami dresses and used an abundance of colorful sequins and lace for elegant looks. Ahluwalia, on the other hand, relied on African-inspired prints with geometric shapes and restrained color schemes.

How to style it:

The cami dress can be simply thrown on or styled with layering and accessories. For an effortless daytime outfit, pair the dress with trainers and simple jewelry for the summer months, or in the evening with strappy sandals for a night out look. Layers can be worn over or under the dress, either through oversized knitwear, such as cardigans, open shirts, or sweaters, or through turtlenecks and t-shirts that sit underneath the dress. Even if you want the dress to be free-flowing, statement belts can hold the dress together well and give it more shape.

The cami dress is age independent and can stay in the closet all year round. Its relevance among the current trends is undiminished and has ensured that it has been a popular purchase in recent years. Its prominent position on the catwalks means it won’t be going away any time soon.
