Procession of the Holy Blood attracts a lot of people after the corona break of three years
The procession passed without incident. At 2.30 pm the procession moved from the Dijver to the Burg. Public interest was high after a three-year corona break. Tickets were sold out for many locations.
The preparations for the procession did not go smoothly due to the corona pandemic. “Exponents and organizations with whom we worked in the past dropped out,” said director Dominique Deckers in the last straight line to the procession. “Several dozen new extras and employees had to be found. The months of delay meant looking for creative solutions to practical problems and a lot of night work.”
450 new costumes
For this edition, the wardrobe of the extras has been updated. There are more than 450 new costumes on display and also a new carillon carriage. The future of the Holy Blood Procession is already assured. Just this week, the Flemish government announced that it will give the procession a subsidy of 50,000 euros for next year.
The procession, an organization of the noble Confrérie of the Holy Blood, has been on the UNESCO list of cultural heritage for years. The procession starts from 1304.
