A 49-year-old man from Belgium was seriously injured in the collision on the A4 near Steenbergen, in which four cars were involved on Sunday night. The police announced this on Monday afternoon. The accident has been causing problems on the A4 from Rotterdam to Antwerp since early Monday morning. The accident happened around a quarter past five at the exit to Tholen in Zeeland.
The seriously injured Belgian was thrown from his car by the impact of the collision. Due to the seriousness of his situation, a trauma helicopter was called. Two other drivers – a 68-year-old man from Alphen aan den Rijn and a 19-year-old man from Waddinxveen – were also injured and had to be taken to hospital, the police reported.
A fourth driver, a 43-year-old woman from Steenbergen, escaped unscathed.
Take a detour
The damage was so great that the road was completely closed until eleven in the morning. Only one lane is now closed.
A diversion has been set up. Traffic is – still – advised to drive via Roosendaal, on the A59, the A17 and the A58.
Rijkswaterstaat reports that the road will probably only be opened at half past one in the afternoon. This is due to an investigation by the police.
