Prison sentence for man who threatens sister and sets off explosive at her home: “You will die”

A 25-year-old man has been sentenced to 18 months in prison, of which 6 months are suspended, for threatening his sister and her family. The man blew up her mailbox with a nitrate. The man is not allowed to enter Amsterdam for two years.

According to the court, the man seriously harassed his sister for a long period of time. In May 2022, he threatened her by transferring €0.01 to her bank account with the text: “You are going to die”. That same day he destroyed her doorbell camera.

A few months later the man made the mistake again. He violated the imposed contact ban and threw a nitrate into his sister’s mailbox, destroying the mailbox. No one was injured. During the arrest he resisted and made kicking movements at a police officer. The suspect stated that he was more or less continuously under the influence of drugs, which he believed was partly the reason for his actions.

Fear and insecurity

These events caused his sister to suffer from feelings of fear and insecurity, the court said. Although the public prosecutor had demanded a prison sentence of one year and TBS with compulsory treatment, the judge did not agree. The man’s actions caused considerable damage and nuisance, but the judge did not consider the criminal offenses serious enough for admission to a psychiatric institution.

According to the suspect’s lawyer, he only wanted to scare his sister and never intended to cause harm. The man has now kicked the habit and has indicated that he is sorry and ashamed.

Location ban Amsterdam

The man is also banned from alcohol and drugs and is not allowed to enter Amsterdam during the two-year probationary period. If he does not comply with the rules, he can receive a maximum of 6 months additional prison time.
