A special evening for 19-year-old Princess Ariane. For the first time she attended a state banquet and she went all out. While she normally always dresses modestly, she put on a red dress for the occasion. And for the first time we saw Ariane with a diadem. “It really is her tiara debut.”

“She is really the star of the evening,” says fashion expert Josine Droogendijk of the website Fashion queen Máxima full of enthusiasm. “She is always dressed quite modestly and the red color really brightens her up.”

At the state banquet in the Royal Palace in Amsterdam with the Japanese Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako, Ariane wore a red dress from Safiyaa. This is a brand that is also regularly worn by Princess Amalia. The red fabric had only one flower. “Then you don’t need very big wow sleeves or big collars to look very beautiful and powerful.”

But the most striking thing is the diadem that Ariane wore, because that is a first. “It is the first time,” said Droogendijk. “It really is her tiara debut. It is a diadem that King Willem III ordered for Emma. But he never saw it himself again, because he had already died. It was actually originally a much larger diadem with all those beautiful diamond stars on it. I think that is a bit too big for a first diadem.”

Amalia opted for an altered dress by Jan Taminiau, which she previously wore at the wedding of the Jordanian crown prince. She also wore a diadem from the time of Queen Emma.

The largest diadem and most expensive diamond

More striking was Queen Máxima, who went for the largest diadem from the Orange vault, with the most expensive diamond that the Oranges have. Droogendijk: “The large light blue stone on top is the Stuart diamond. All diamond lovers worldwide know this stone. It is so exceptional in value, so exceptional in size.”

Yet the fashion expert’s attention immediately went to the light dress, made by Iris van Herpen. “I always thought that no dress could compete with this diadem. But what Iris van Herpen creates is art.”

Droogendijk continues: “It almost looks as if those lines have all been applied to her skin, but that is of course not the case. There is simply a transparent, skin-colored fabric underneath. But this is technically a very difficult dress to make. And if you show that to Japan: look what we have in house.”

In addition to members of the royal family, Princess Beatrix, Princess Laurentien, Princess Margriet and her husband Pieter van Vollenhoven are also present at the dinner.

The banquet starts with a dish of king crab with leek mousse and fennel vinaigrette, after which the guests are served a mushroom consommé with stewed veal and shiitake mushrooms. The footmen then serve a beef fillet with sage gravy, asparagus, green beans and potato savarin. Wednesday’s dessert is an almond cake with cherry blossom sauce.
