Prime Minister Johnson’s conservatives suffer defeat in municipal elections | Abroad

Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s Conservatives suffered painful losses in the municipal elections in the United Kingdom, according to the first results.

For the first time, the Labor opposition was able to gain control of the district council in London’s governmental district of Westminster. The district of Wandsworth also went to the Labor Party for the first time in four decades. Symbolically, this counts as a heavy defeat for the head of government. In other parts of England, the losses of the Tories are rather limited for the time being.

Johnson was already under pressure because of the illegal lockdown parties. Whether that pressure will increase after this ballot is not clear for the time being.

Voters in Scotland and Wales could also elect new municipal and district councils. The count has yet to begin there, as in Northern Ireland where a new regional parliament was elected.
