Students from the Joseph School in Bloemendaal were surprised this afternoon when an ambulance drove into their schoolyard. Fortunately no one was injured, but the students had collected money for the Sailing of Freedom foundation, which buys old ambulances and sends them full of relief supplies to war zones in Ukraine.
Mike Noordhoek, director of the Joseph School, is proud of his children’s fundraising campaign. “We raised almost a thousand euros and you really noticed that the children, especially in the higher classes, were involved. And this is of course tangible, because of this they see what happens with the money.”
27 ambulances
Tomorrow for the second time a group of ambulances will leave for war zones in Ukraine, with which the organization has Sailing of freedom ensured that about 27 ambulances have left. This is urgently needed, according to Zmicier Zaleznicenka of the foundation, because there is a great need for medical aids.
“The ambulance is currently empty, but before we leave, we will fill it completely with medicines, medical equipment and other aids. The ambulance itself can also be used to help people,” said Zaleznicenka.

The car has permission to enter Ukraine, but people from that country will take over the wheel at the border to continue driving. There are also stickers on the inside of the car with the request to take photos and videos and send them to people in the Netherlands. They will then be posted here social media channels of Sails of Freedom shared.
The director does not have to think twice about the question whether they will collect money at the Joseph School more often. “This does encourage more. We will certainly set up more campaigns,” said Noordhoek.
