Zuiderenk primary school in Wijster is taking a preview of the Children’s Book Week. Together with a few spiders and snails. The theme of the annual week is: ‘at my home’. Which animals live nearby and how do they make a house? The children go to investigate.
The lesson is provided by Mathijs ter Bork from IVN Nature Education. Every year IVN produces a lesson package tailored to the theme of Children’s Book Week, available free of charge to primary schools. The package contains active lessons, where children often go outside and discover nature.
Isn’t the idea to dive into a book during Children’s Book Week? “No, it is both and,” says Ter Bork. “I think it’s important not just to talk about books, but that the book also presents the world: what can you see in your own world that relates to the theme?”
Children’s Book Week officially starts on October 4, but the Zuiderenk class has already started, with a few spiders playing the leading role.
