Pride at the Beach in Zandvoort: “Everyone should be able to be whoever they want”

It’s Pride at the Beach in Zandvoort and that means lots of rainbow flags, happy people and fun music. In the town hall on Raadhuisplein, a real Rainbow Radio program was heard from the mayor’s old office.

One of the presenters is Ronald Hueskens, co-organizer of Pride at the Beach. “Normally we make a radio program on ZFM every first Monday of the month and today we make a special edition from the town hall. We have put the boxes out of the window so that everyone outside those shopping can follow our program.”

Important

According to Hueskens, it is important that there is an event like Pride at the Beach. Hueskens: “It was recently in the news that in the Reformed Lyceum in Gorkum students were forced to come out of the closet by the school management. They were also locked in the director’s room and had to say publicly that they liked men or women. Scandalous , really scandalous that this is still happening in the Netherlands, so we are not there yet.”

A little further in the village, Stationsplein is full of colorful and dressed people. One of them is Huib. “It’s so nice that I can be who I want to be today. Look at all these people around me, everyone is so cheerful. It’s important that this is possible in the Netherlands. Actually, it should always be like this.”

From the Stationsplein, the colorful procession runs through the village to eventually arrive at the Raadhuisplein. There will be a closing party of three days of Pride at the Beach tonight.

According to co-organizer Ronald Hueskens, Pride’s message is clear. “Everyone should be able to be who they want to be,” continues Hueskens. “So open and embrace the diversity that exists between people that is becoming more and more visible and luckily more and more people feel free to do that too and we will continue to fight for that. We do that with a smile, a tear, activism and party! “
