Press statement: ‘Frankfurter Rundschau’ on Northern Ireland’s head of government

FRANKFURT (dpa-AFX) – “Frankfurter Rundschau” on the Northern Irish head of government:

“A Catholic as the highest political representative: Northern Ireland’s Protestant elite has been trying to prevent this for 100 years. With withholding education, chronic unemployment, withholding civil rights and with bombs. And in the end they lost because that’s the right thing to do.

The hope must now be that the circle of violence that is emerging is the last, that the Protestant wagon train collapses. The chances for that are not bad. The Alliance Party has established itself as the third force in Northern Irish politics. And many Protestant sections of the population can still remember the good years in the EU, when peace was possible and violence was absurd.”/yyzz/DP/he
