“Not every invitation is a cause for celebration. The chairwoman of the US parliament has hardly left the beleaguered Taiwan when the next visit flutters onto the table – this time to the German Bundestag and its president. Everyone knows that an acceptance pours more fuel on the fire and draws Germany into the conflict. A refusal is understood as giving in and encourages the regime in Beijing to make further threats. A real dilemma, then. Whatever the Bundestag Presidium decides, the consequences are risky. But it is also correct: a suitable date, There is no such thing as traveling to Taiwan. Beijing will always respond with threats of war as soon as foreign politicians land in Taipei, thereby emphasizing the island’s independence. At best, the Germans can try to buy time and wait and see whether this crisis doesn’t still make sense leeway for diplomacy.
