TOHere we are. One of the most solemn and full of unknowns rituals that characterizes our parliamentary democracy is about to begin: the election of the President of the Republic.
I know, you’ve been hearing about it since at least October and you already have your pockets full. But there are two or three things that must be kept in mind in the boredom that surrounds some quirinalitia chronicles. At least according to the writer.
A President of the Republic must know the Constitution, obvious.
But above all, he must masterfully manage laws and regulations that he will be called upon to use in his role as guardian of the fundamental Charter.
So far, the ABC of the head of state. Without it, better to stay at home. Yet not everyone thinks that.
I realize when I hear imaginative candidacies from yet another well-known face of the moment, a little pop, a little populist.
In recent decades, we have gone through profound political crises that we would not have overcome if the Quirinale had not applied a painstaking knowledge of those laws that are fundamental so that the machine of democracy does not get stuck or even explode.
The second consideration that I allow myself to make concerns the profile, that is the requirements of the head of state. Here too, we hear of all kinds: a technician, a politician, a party secretary or a former prime minister, etc.
I have my say: the first citizen of the country must know a lot about politics, he must have breathed it deeply, this time I speak not of theory, but of political practice.
Because to untangle the most serious crises, the ability to listen and mediate that derives from experience in the field are irreplaceable. Political sensitivity is another matter, which a technician could also have, but which, in my opinion, is not enough.
Finally, some considerations regarding female candidates. “It takes a woman,” he hears himself say. Here, posed in this way, the question is already as beautiful as it is debased. There is no need to put forward the request in abstract terms.
Are there female candidates worthy of crossing the Quirinale gate? They do. Everything else, for us women, is what a X Factor they have renamed it a “complete insult”.
