The force, which was established in the fall of 2022, officially serves to protect the external borders of Russia and Belarus. The unit consists of 9,000 Russian soldiers, who are permanently stationed on Belarusian territory.
Lately, there has been increasing speculation that an attack by Russian forces on Ukraine could be via Belarus. The country is an ally of Moscow, but the Belarusian army has so far not taken part in the fighting on Ukrainian territory.
