The short film ‘Malika can fly’ by director Reinout Hellenthal will premiere next Wednesday, March 8 in the Nieuwe Kolk in Assen.
The film is about the dream of 17-year-old Malika to become a professional basketball player. It is in danger of falling apart. Because her parents are not well off and cannot afford the membership of the sports club.
“What the film is mainly about is the inequality of opportunities, because Malika lives in poverty, just like many other children in the Netherlands,” the filmmaker previously told RTV Drenthe. He hopes that the film will contribute to the discussion about this and that parents and adults living in poverty will sooner dare to take the step towards assistance.
The film was shot at various locations in Assen, including sports hall De Spreng.
