Premier League: US entrepreneur Bill Foley takes over AFC Bournemouth

Premier League promoted

US entrepreneur Bill Foley is the new owner of AFC Bournemouth. As the Premier League club announced on Tuesday, previous owner Maxim Demin has sold 100 percent of his shares to a consortium called Black Knight Football Club, of which Foley is the main investor. The 77-year-old is the founder and owner of the Vegas Golden Knights ice hockey team, which has been playing in the North American NHL since 2017. As one of the minority shareholders, US actor Michael B. Jordan (“Creed”, “Black Panther”) is also involved in the takeover.

Foley is also chairman of AFC Bournemouth with immediate effect and is expected at the stadium for the next home game against Crystal Palace on 31 December. “He has also purchased a home in the area, which demonstrates Bill’s commitment to the football club and community,” the club’s statement said.

Foley himself announced that he wanted to bring the “Cherries” forward in order to “put them in the best possible position to be successful”. The Premier League returnee, who played in the 4th division in 2009/10 and was promoted to the English top flight for the first time in 2015 and was able to stay there for five seasons, is currently in 14th place with 16 points from 15 games.

AFC Bournemouth: Foley talks about his plans and goals

“So our job is to provide the support and investment needed to make our club – yours and mine – the best it can be on and off the pitch. We are committed to doing this with a view to sustainable, long-term success,” continued Foley. “We have already identified several areas to focus on: facilities, player development, player recruitment, fan experience and game promotion initiatives.”

Foley stressed the “investments will be spread over years and aim to maintain and improve our position in the Premier League and increase participation at all levels of football in our region. A number of initiatives will be immediately visible, most notably the construction of a new, state-of-the-art training facility designed to help our players reach their maximum potential and show potential players our commitment to success. We will continue to develop programs and make investments to support the growth of football in our community for all ages, genders and skill levels.”
