Premier League tightens rules for club directors and owners

Exclusion for criminal offenses

Anyone who has been sanctioned for human rights abuses will no longer be allowed to be a director or owner of a Premier League club. The clubs in the English top flight approved a corresponding change in the rules on Thursday, as the league announced.

Accordingly, people for crimes such as violent crime, corruption, fraud, tax evasion and hate crime will no longer be allowed to head Premier League clubs. Also, people who are sanctioned by various organizations in the UK are automatically excluded from club leadership.

The Premier League has recently been heavily criticized by human rights organizations such as Amnesty International for allowing the Saudi Arabian investment fund PIF to take over responsibility for Newcastle United.
