Premier League bottom
Sheffield United has parted ways with promotion coach Paul Heckingbottom. The 46-year-old took over the position in November 2021 and managed to return to the Premier League at the second attempt. “The Blades” are in last place there with five points from 14 games. Overall, the team led by Heckingbottom scored an average of 1.65 points in 98 games.
“Firstly, on behalf of the board, I would like to thank Paul for all his efforts at Sheffield United,” said chief executive Stephen Bettis. “His professionalism and commitment have been a credit to the club and I am sure all United members have enjoyed their promotion season. However, after slipping to bottom of the table and a series of disappointing results and performances, it is felt that a change is necessary to give the club a boost and maintain any chance of remaining in the Premier League beyond this season. “
Zidane, Kuntz & Co.: These trainers are currently on the market
Sheffield hopes to be able to present a new coach before Wednesday evening’s home game against Liverpool FC (8:30 p.m.). The favorite is Chris Wilder, who looked after the “Blades” from May 2016 to March 2021 and was most recently on the sidelines at Watford FC from March to May 2023.
Update 2:08 p.m.: Just a few minutes after the split, Sheffield confirmed Wilder’s return, signing a contract until 2025. “It was simply an opportunity I couldn’t turn down. Just like in 2016, when this club calls, you can’t turn it down,” Wilder said. “This is Sheffield United, this is my team and I’m really happy to be back. We are in a difficult situation, I understand that, but I believe I can make a difference.”
