The English top division has officially banned clubs from wearing gambling sponsorship kits
The Premier League is officially giving up betting, at least as main shirt sponsor. From the 2026-27 season, at the end of a transition period granted to protect existing agreements, no club will be able to have the name of a physical or online betting agency written in the center of their shirt.
The reasons
—
The clubs have unanimously decided on the ban, becoming the first British sports league to say no to betting, at least as a main sponsor. The Premier wants to be among the ambassadors of a new attitude towards betting that the whole of the United Kingdom is examining: Her Majesty’s government has long since started a review of the rules on betting and the teams of the most followed league have taken this decision after also consulted with the Department of Culture, Media and Sport. The Premier is also working with other leagues and other sports to create a shared code of conduct on the relationship between professional sports and betting.
The limitations
—
At the moment there are 8 clubs in the Premier League that have a betting company as their main sponsor, for an estimated turnover of 68 million euros per season. The provision does not affect the agreements already in place: until its entry into force, at the beginning of 2026-27, the teams will be able to continue to have betting agencies as shirt sponsors and will also be able to obtain new agreements, which however expire at the end of 2025-26. When the new rules come into force, they will only affect the main sponsor: clubs will be able to continue to have agreements with betting agencies, whose names may appear on the sleeve or elsewhere in the stadium. However, the message remains strong.
