Premier League: Liverpool FC with a mandatory win

Jürgen Klopp and Liverpool remain within striking distance in the Premier League title race.

The team of the German team manager clinched a 2-0 (1-0) win at Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday and, as second in the table, is still only three points behind leaders and champions Manchester City. It was Liverpool’s eighth league win in a row.

Record champions Manchester United celebrated an important 3-2 (2-1) win against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday evening thanks to superstar Cristiano Ronaldo in a duel for a place in the Champions League and increased the gap to the Londoners to five points.

The five-time world soccer player was an outstanding man in coach Ralf Rangnick’s team as a three-time goal scorer (12th/38th/81st). With 807 goals, the 37-year-old is now the most successful goalscorer in history in official games, replacing Czechoslovakian Josef Bican (805).

Ex-Dortmunder Jadon Sancho prepared his second goal in an exemplary manner. Star striker Harry Kane (35′, hand penalty) equalized for the Spurs in the meantime to make it 1-1, United defense chief Harry Maguire (72′) scored an own goal to make it 2-2.

Success was easier for Liverpool. Four days earlier, the Reds had lost to Inter Milan in the Champions League round of 16 second leg (0-1), but still reached the quarter-finals. On Saturday, Luis Diaz (19th) took the lead after strong preparatory work by former Schalke player Joel Matip, star attacker Mohamed Salah (61st) increased with a hand penalty.
