Arsenal FC moved ahead in the Premier League title race with a win against Brentford FC. Kai Havertz was the match winner for the “Gunners”.
Arsenal achieved a hard-fought 2-1 win against Brentford on Saturday (March 9, 2024) and took over the top of the table for the time being with 64 points. On Sunday there will be a direct duel between the other title rivals, between Liverpool FC (63 points) and champions Manchester City (62).
“These points were so important for us and you could see that in the second half. We didn’t show our best performance in the first half. Then to win like that is even better,” Havertz told the TV channel Sky.
Havertz with the winning goal for Arsenal
Arsenal were overwhelmingly superior from the start, and after Declan Rice’s header into the lead (19′), everything looked like a win according to plan. But a blackout by Arsenal keeper Aaron Ramsdale, who shot at the onrushing Yoane Wissa and, in a sense, put the ball into the goal himself (45+4), deprived the “Gunners” of the rewards of a strong first half.
Ramsdale made up for his mistake after the break, twice preventing a possible deficit with strong saves. Arsenal stayed on the trigger, Havertz scored with a header four minutes before the end and secured an important three points in the title duel.
United can win again
Manchester United celebrated a sense of success again after two bankruptcies in a row. The Red Devils defeated Everton FC 2-0 and remain in the race for the international places. Bruno Ferndandes (12th minute) and Marcus Rashford (36th) secured the victory at Old Trafford with their goals from the penalty spot. United remain in sixth place with 47 points.
