The English Premier League club Aston Villa has found a prominent successor for team manager Steven Gerrard, who was fired a few days ago.
As the club from Birmingham confirmed on Monday evening, Unai Emery will take over as coach at Table 14. Accordingly, Aston Villa paid the exit clause of six million euros to free the Spaniard from FC Villarreal.
Emery will begin work on November 1 after final details are finalized. Liverpool legend Gerrard took over as manager at Aston Villa in November 2021 and was fired last week after a poor start to the season. English media had also brought Thomas Tuchel into play as a successor.
Emery already has Premier League experience, having coached Arsenal from 2018-2019. There is also an engagement at Paris St. Germain and three consecutive Europa League titles with Sevilla FC (2014 to 2016).
The 50-year-old has been coaching Villarreal since 2020, with whom he bowled Bayern from the Champions League last season. In 2021 he also won the Europa League with Villarreal.
