It was a ‘frustrating afternoon’ for FC Volendam according to midfielder Calvin Twigt. On a visit to AZ the Eel farmers little to crumble and saw AZ play frivolously to a 3-0 victory. “You see heels here and there. It is frustrating when you have to run after the ball,” says Twigt.
The Volendam midfielder had to deal with AZ that quickly took the lead through Ruben van Bommel. In the following minutes the score could have quickly risen much higher, but AZ failed to do so. “We’ve been living here for a whole week and if you showed this on the field, it’s not good,” says Twigt.
“It all went a little too fast,” Twigt continues about the match. Even though he chased the ball a lot, he didn’t feel powerless. “It’s okay if you don’t have the ball, but you have to be in the right position. Things weren’t going well as a team.”
Volendam’s plan was to put AZ under pressure quickly and intensely. However, due to the score trend, that plan had to be changed quickly. Afterwards, coach Matthias Kohler was particularly disappointed with the moments when the goals were conceded. “Then you’re trying to stay in the game,” says Kohler, who was very busy coaching along the line to help his team ‘where he could’.
