‘Power failure in Flevoland was caused by failing safety systems’

The failure that left a large part of Flevoland without power for approximately 45 minutes on Friday, according to grid operator Tennet, was because safety systems were not working properly. This is reported by the ANP news agency. During a short circuit, the cables remained live, while the emergency systems should have interrupted the circuit.

As a result, power cables started to smolder and burn in various places in Flevoland. A aerial photo van Omroep Flevoland shows that smoke rose along kilometers of high-voltage line near Dronten. The A6 was temporarily closed because cables appeared damaged, resulting in long traffic jams.

About 350 travelers had to be evacuated from a stationary train between Lelystad and Dronten. The short circuit has caused “major damage” to the train cables, writes railway manager prorail. In any case, no trains will be running on the route this weekend. “We expect the recovery to take a long time.”
