Pots for the 2022/23 Champions League draw: BVB threatens a hammer group

26 participants 2022/23 are certain

When the Champions League final between Liverpool FC and Real Madrid is scheduled for next Saturday in Paris, numerous fans of Ajax Amsterdam will be sitting in front of the television and keeping their fingers crossed for the “royal”. The reason for this is the UEFA regulation on the composition of the pots, which will be decisive for next season’s group stage. Transfermarkt explain the rules ahead of the draw in Nyon on August 25.

UEFA Champions League 2022/23: These participants have been determined so far

To date, 26 of the 32 tickets for the upcoming season in the Champions League have been allocated. These are the 24 teams that qualified directly based on their position in their league, as well as this year’s winners of the “premier class” and the Europa League (Eintracht Frankfurt). Because the two finalists of the Champions League 2021/22 with Liverpool and Real are already there anyway, the place of the “premium class” winner goes to the champion of the country, which is ranked in the UEFA five-year ranking at the end of the 2020/21 season eleven lay – in this case Celtic Glasgow from Scotland.

Premier League Champions

The six remaining teams will be determined in a total of four qualifying rounds, which will be held between July 5th and August 24th this year.

Pots for the Champions League draw: BVB threatens a hammer group

The composition of the raffle pots will be the same in 2022 as in previous years: the champions of the six leagues with the best value in the UEFA five-year ranking as well as the winners of the Champions League and Europa League will be listed in the first pot. Should either team have also become champions in their domestic league, the place goes to the champions of the league that is in seventh place – this year the Eredivisie.

Before the final for the 2021/22 trophy, the situation is as follows: Should Liverpool win in Paris on May 28, coach Jürgen Klopp’s team would slip into pot 1. On the other hand, if Real Madrid wins the handle pot for the fifth time since 2014, Ajax Amsterdam, as the Dutch champions, will get the place, since the “royal” are already in the first pot as champions of the LaLiga.

The remaining three pots are then ranked based on their UEFA club coefficients. Interesting from a German point of view: Borussia Dortmund can only be found in pot 3 after being eliminated early this season and was overtaken by RB Leipzig, among others, who advanced into pot 2 by reaching the semi-finals of the Europa League. For example, BVB could face a group with Real Madrid and Chelsea or Paris Saint-Germain and FC Barcelona in the coming year.

*Olympique Marseille is also definitely qualified for the Champions League. Whether the runners-up in Ligue 1 goes into pot 3 or pot 4 depends on which teams are added via qualification.
