We look even further back. Boertien was born in Nieuwlande, where he lived until he was 22. “My parents thought it was important that I went to a reformed school, that was Nikielda in Dalerend. I always had problems with the teachers, because I wasn’t that fast, because I mainly saw the birds flying outside. They were always behind me. Then I visited secondary school in Nieuwlande.”
