A motorist hit a group of cyclists in the Zeeland Retranchement on Sunday morning. Three people were injured as a result. The driver may have had too much to drink. In Brabant, a motorist may have deliberately hit cyclists.
A spokesperson for the Zeeland Police tells NU.nl that an A appeared in a breathalyzer on the street instead of a P (Pass) or F (Fail). In that case, it is not certain whether the blower has had too much to drink or whether the test cannot get a good result. “The motorist was taken to the office for a breath analysis. He could also have had something to drink, but just below the standard. The analysis must provide a solution.”
The collision happened just before 10 a.m. on the Oude Zeedijk. It is not clear what exactly happened and how large the group of cyclists was. The car has been towed.
Deliberate collision with cyclists in Bavel in Brabant
Half an hour before the collision in Retranchement, there was also a collision with cyclists in Bavel, near Breda. In this case, it may have been a deliberate collision. The driver continued to drive, a police spokesman said.
It concerned a group of sixteen Belgian cyclists. Two of them were injured. The accident happened on Gilzeweg, when the group was driving on the roadway instead of on the adjacent bicycle path. According to the police, the motorist was probably irritated by this, after which he honked violently as the group passed.
When turning back to the right, the driver may have hit the two cyclists, the spokesman said. The cyclists state that they were deliberately hit, but according to the police it has yet to be determined what exactly happened.
A 72-year-old man was taken to hospital with a fracture, scrapes and bruises. The other cyclist suffered minor injuries.
The police now know who the driver of the car, a black Volkswagen Up, is based on camera images from the area. He is requested to report to the office.
