Portugal young star
Portugal’s young star Gonçalo Ramos wants to benefit from playing with superstars like Cristiano Ronaldo at his first World Cup. “It’s another opportunity for me to learn from great players. I’m happy to share the dressing room with them and to be on the pitch together,” said the 21-year-old striker from Benfica Lisbon before Portugal’s second World Cup game against Uruguay on Monday (8:00 p.m. CET/ARD and MagentaTV). “Everyone who is here is ready to be in the starting XI and play.”
Ramos was called up to Portugal’s national team for the first time in September. He made his debut in a 4-0 win over Nigeria in the final friendly, scoring a goal when Ronaldo was injured. Ramos plays in the center forward position, which is usually occupied by Ronaldo in Portugal. In the 3-2 win against Ghana at the start of the World Cup, Ramos came on for the captain in the 88th minute.
His team Benfica are also unbeaten this season due to their strong performances in front of goal. Ramos has scored 14 goals and six assists in 21 games for Roger Schmidt’s side, who are still unbeaten in all competitions. Since the summer, this has brought him a market value increase of 10 million to currently 24 million euros.

Taking part in the World Cup was something “special” for him, even without a large part of the game, said Ramos. “I made my debut for Portugal, I made my debut at the World Cup,” he said. “It’s the fulfillment of a childhood dream for me.”
