Portugal loses to Switzerland in Nations League

Portugal suffered its first defeat in the Nations League in the away game against the previously scoreless Switzerland. The Portuguese, winner of the first edition in 2019, lost 1-0 in Geneva.

The only goal of the evening came after 55 seconds. Haris Seferovic headed in after a perfect cross from the right wing of Silvan Widmer. Seferovic plays for Benfica, last season’s number 3 in Portugal.

In the remaining hour and a half, despite a number of offensive substitutions, Portugal failed to score. Goalkeeper Jonas Omlin played a leading role for the Swiss with some good saves.

Portugal took office without Cristiano Ronaldo, who has been sent on holiday by national coach Fernando Santos. The same goes for João Moutinho and Raphaël Guerreiro. Diogo Jota of Liverpool only came in after an hour.

The Portuguese were passed by Spain, which dominated the Czech Republic 2-0 in Málaga. Halfway through the first half, Carlos Soler scored after good preparatory work by Marco Asensio and fifteen minutes before the end, Pablo Sarabia made it 2-0.

Spain has 8 points after four matches, Portugal has one point less. Spain reached the final of the Nations League last year, in which France was 2-1 too strong.
