Machete will next compete in the Miss Universe pageant to be held in El Salvador later this year.
Machete is not the first transgender in the Miss Universe pageant. In 2018, a trans woman was crowned Miss Spain Angela Ponce.
In addition to that, this year the Netherlands crowned a trans woman as Miss and is sending a 22-year-old Rikkie Valeria Kollén to represent his country in El Salvador.
Finland also saw the first transgender Miss Finland finalist. From Tampere Rimi Riutta was awarded as the audience’s favorite in the finale.
A transgender contestant has never won Miss Universe. Currently, the rights to the competition are owned by the Thai media company JKN Global Group. The company is run by a trans woman Jakapong “Anne” Jakrajutatip.
Transgender people have been allowed to participate in the Miss Universe contest since 2012.
