Poperinge introduces a permanent cycling zone

In streets within the cycling zone, cars are not allowed to overtake cyclists and the speed limit is thirty km/h. Those who cycle can also use the full width of the track. In concrete terms, a number of important streets in the center fall under the measure. This should make narrow one-way streets safer and promote cycling.

Proponents and opponents

The city council chose to continue the traffic plan and relies on a positive advice from the youth council, mobility council, senior advisory council and the school consultation. They believe that the cycling zone has made Poperinge less dangerous and quieter in the past year. Opinions are divided among the inhabitants. Most cyclists from the 651 reactions on the city website logically support the traffic regime, while motorists rather disapprove of it.

The city attributes complaints about the cycling zone more to cyclists who do not respect the basic rules. These actions frustrate motorists, but according to the city council, they are not to blame for the changed traffic situation. Ultimately, the city will stick to the current bicycle zone and not expand it.
