Borussia Mönchengladbach received a slap in the traditional player survey of the “kicker” after the weak first half of the season in the Bundesliga. RB Leipzig and Hertha BSC are also not doing well with the professionals.
234 Bundesliga footballers voted in the “kicker”, a whopping 34.1 percent of them see Gladbach as the negative surprise of the season so far in the German House of Lords.
In second place, the professionals chose the crashed runner-up RB Leipzig (19.2 percent), while Hertha BSC landed in third place (15.7 percent).
The players’ vote is no coincidence: After the first 17 games of the season, the Gladbachers, who started out with European Cup ambitions, are on a disappointing 14th place in the table with just 19 points. Only two points separate the team of coach Adi Hütter from the relegation zone.
Also bitter for Borussia: Most recently, Matthias Ginter and Denis Zakaria, two top performers, confirmed their departure by summer at the latest. The duo’s contracts are running out, so Gladbach will probably not even be able to collect a transfer fee.
At RB Leipzig, after the much-acclaimed runner-up last year, things are not going according to plan this season. Tenth place is far too little for the great demands of the Saxons, who also left the Champions League without a hitch.
Change of coach at RB Leipzig and Hertha BSC
Coach Jesse Marsch already had to take his hat off. Former Schalke coach Domenico Tedesco is now set to start catching up on the international positions in the second half of the season.
Hertha BSC sees itself there as a matter of course, especially since investor Lars Windhorst has pumped several million into the capital city club in recent years.
The gray reality in Berlin is eleventh place and thus, as of now, again more relegation battle than attack to the top. Hertha BSC also reacted to the coaching position, Tayfun Korkut succeeded Pál Dárdai.
