Poll: Majority against supply of cruise missiles to Ukraine

BERLIN (dpa-AFX) – According to a recent survey, a good half of the people in Germany are against the delivery of Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine. 52 percent of those entitled to vote expressed their opposition, as can be seen from the ARD “Deutschlandtrend” in the ARD “Morgenmagazin”. Only 36 percent are in favor, 12 percent do not position themselves.

According to the survey, opposition is particularly strong in eastern Germany (70 percent), while in western Germany 47 percent are against and 40 percent are in favour.

There are also differences based on party preferences. 76 percent of AfD supporters rejected the delivery in the survey, while voters for the Greens (68 percent) and the FDP (56 percent) said they were mostly in agreement.

Ukraine has long been demanding that the federal government supply German Taurus cruise missiles for defense against Russia. Chancellor Olaf Scholz spoke cautiously on Sunday. In the ZDF “summer interview”, the SPD politician said that, as in the past, the federal government will always check every single decision very carefully – what is going, what makes sense, what the German contribution could be./utz/DP/jha
