Politics in Hoorn regrets fireworks ban during fair and asks questions

The large fair in the center of Hoorn will be resumed normally at the beginning of August after two years of corona silence. However, one part still interrupts: the traditional fireworks show. To the disappointment of politicians.

At the beginning of August, the Pelmolenpad in Hoorn will once again be dominated by the funfair, which is already celebrating its 576th edition. The fireworks are traditionally lit on the last Friday evening.

The municipality of Hoorn is now putting a stop to that. Work is underway on a city beach and embankment, which is why the municipality does not consider it responsible to hold a fireworks show there, which attracts thousands of visitors.

Communication

A majority of politicians in Hoorn – the CDA, VVD, Hoorn Lokaal en Social Hoorn and D66 – regret this choice and have since asked written questions. “Communication leaves a lot to be desired,” says councilor Rob Droste. “It is unfortunate and strange that we have to hear this decision through the media.”

According to him, a tradition is being lost that could not continue in recent years. “The fair is back as usual, that simply includes a fireworks show.”

They also designate Juliana Park as an alternative location. “Or with drones, a more limited supply,” Droste thinks aloud. “We see the fair and its fireworks show as Hoorn’s showpiece. It would be a shame if we couldn’t fully celebrate it again.”

Droste therefore hopes the municipality will reconsider this decision: “The best thing would be if they reverse the decision.”
