Politicians are still struggling with position on the future of MAA | 1Limburg

Many parties in the Provincial Council are still struggling with their position on the future of Maastricht Aachen Airport because they have too little information.

This is evident from a tour.

Four scenarios
On Wednesday, the Provincial Executive will announce all the advantages and disadvantages of the four scenarios currently on the table. The two most extreme variants for Maastricht Aachen Airport – maximum growth and closure – receive the least political support. The other two plans are: fully committed to a freight airport with fewer passengers in the future and sustainable flying from 2030 as a competitor for international road and rail traffic.

Too little information
“We are still waiting for a number of crucial pieces of information,” says Aleida Berghorst of the PvdA. The VVD also lacks documents that are important for the final choice. VVD member of parliament Teun Heldens: “It will mainly depend on the information we do not have yet. We are waiting with great interest.”

Closure
It is already clear to both parties that it is better to close the airport in Beek. It costs a lot of money and causes a lot of inconvenience. This applies to GroenLinks and the Party for the Animals. Together they account for six of the 47 seats. The largest party in the States, the CDA, questions this variant. CDA member of parliament Wouter IJpelaar: “If we ever want to build houses there, we will have to renovate so much that the costs that this entails are just as great as the revenues. That is why we are now leaning towards keeping the airport open.” The PVV is also against closure.

Schiphol group
Earlier research showed that the rest of our country in particular benefits economically from the airport, but that South Limburg is mainly affected by the nuisance. That is why financial support from the government and the Schiphol Group is of great importance to the VVD. That party is now going in with a straight leg. Without promises from others, the VVD could well vote for the closure of Maastricht Aachen Airport.
