The municipality of Borger-Odoorn is best off with a coalition of no fewer than five parties. This is stated in the advice of independent informer Johan van Tiel.

This concerns the parties: the Labor Party (PvdA), Leefbaar Borger-Odoorn (LBO), VVD, CDA and ChristenUnie (CU). That does not sound very surprising, but with this coalition the largest party, IC (seven seats), is sidelined.

After eight years of reign, Goliath must therefore acquiesce in the opposition role. ‘A majority of the parties is of the opinion that, in view of the election results, the PvdA and LBO should play a role in the formation of the coalition’, is the advice from Van Tiel.

One promising coalition

Based on this, the informateur sees only one promising coalition, namely a coalition of: PvdA, LBO, VVD, CDA and CU. These parties have indicated that they have confidence in a collaboration with each other. By forming this coalition, there is a majority of twelve seats, and an opposition is formed from Municipal Interests (seven seats), GroenLinks (one seat) and D66 (one seat).

Van Tiel advises that the apparent coalition parties discuss the formation of a possible coalition. Finally, Van Tiel recommends appointing a ‘firm’ formateur: ‘Someone with experience in the political and administrative domain’. Who that will be is still a question.

Monday evening debate

The biggest question is: is there a coup lurking in the municipality of Borger-Odoorn? That question will be answered on Monday evening when all parties start a debate about Van Tiel’s advice.
