An armed TBS prisoner was injured by police shots near Hulten on Thursday afternoon after a chase. The 27-year-old man had escaped earlier in the day from a clinic where TBS patients are also treated at the Vrederust Estate in Halsteren. A police helicopter was used in the pursuit. The man was arrested after a long chase.
The TBS prisoner escaped from the clinic around half past twelve, after which the alarm was raised. He then managed to flee in a car and it turned out that he was armed. Near Etten-Leur the police saw the man driving and went after him. The chase took place on the A58 and via Breda, Chaam and Baarle-Nassau.
Ultimately, the man got stuck at the track on the Broekdijk in Hulten. When the police clamped down on his stalled car, he fled. During his flight, officers shot the man with several shots on the Broekdijk. The TBS officer himself did not shoot.
Seven bullet holes
There are seven bullet holes in the window of the police BMW. According to a police source, the TBS officer did not do this.
There were many officers on the ground during the action, including from the Special Interventions Service, who specialize in arresting armed suspects. Yet it was an ordinary officer who shot the TBS prisoner. The man was then taken to hospital under guard with gunshot wounds.
National Criminal Investigation Department
The National Criminal Investigation Department was informed, which is standard practice when the police have shot. The mayor of Gilze en Rijen, which includes the village of Hulten, was also updated.
A spokesperson for the clinic cannot say why the man was admitted there. It is also not clear whether the TBS patient was allowed to go outside. “We have clients who are incarcerated and others who are allowed out as part of their treatment.”
A week ago, a 75-year-old woman was found dead in Halsteren. A suspect who resided in the same institution was arrested for this purpose.
