Police overpower 65-year-old woman in hospital in Aachen | Abroad

According to German media, the woman allegedly set off fireworks, causing a lot of smoke. Special units were called in and the wider area around the hospital was also cordoned off.

Special units eventually managed to overpower the woman. Nothing is yet known about her condition, but the woman was taken away on a stretcher, a reporter from the German news agency DPA saw. No patients were injured during the operation.

According to police, the 65-year-old woman entered the hospital in the afternoon. Shortly afterwards, staff noticed smoke. The woman allegedly set off fireworks. According to ‘Bild’ this happened in the operating room. She then allegedly barricaded herself in a patient’s room. The police cannot yet say who exactly the ‘armed person’ in the hospital was and who was threatened.

According to local newspaper ‘Aachener Zeitung’, the hospital is currently being evacuated and journalists on site report that “some people are desperate” as they are being taken from the hospital.

The Luisenhospital in Boxgrabenstraat is a hospital with 378 beds and twelve specialized departments. Approximately 1,600 employees work there.
