Police open fire on population in Madagascar: 14 dead and 28 injured | Abroad

In Madagascar, 14 people were killed and 28 injured on Monday after police opened fire on the population. That happened when residents tried to get into a police station out of dismay over a disappearance case, local sources report to AFP. The incident took place in the eastern district of Ikongo.

“Nine people died on the spot,” said Tango Oscar Toky, chief physician at the local hospital. Of the 33 injured who were admitted, five died in hospital.

It has been unsettled on the island since a child with albinism disappeared last week. Authorities suspect it has been kidnapped. Four suspects have since been arrested, but the residents are determined to take the law into their own hands.

About 500 people went to the police station and demanded that the suspects be handed over to them. According to a source, the police negotiated with the villagers but tried to break into the premises. Police used smoke bombs to disperse the crowd and fired shots into the air. So several people would have been affected.
