Police in Kiev region report finding another 20 dead civilians

The bodies of another 20 civilians have been found in the Kiev region in the past 24 hours, according to police, bringing the total in the area around the Ukrainian capital to 1,235. Police Chief Andrij Nebytov said the finds were made in Borodjanka and surrounding villages, about 25 kilometers from Butja, where Russian troops are said to have committed war crimes.

Of the 1,235 bodies, more than 800 have been examined by experts. “Unfortunately, most of them died from gunshot wounds,” Nebytov said in a video released by the Interior Ministry. He said 282 victims have yet to be identified. A member of the Ukrainian government said in late April that the remains of 1,020 people are in morgues in the Kiev region.

The number of confirmed civilian deaths from the war in Ukraine stands at more than 3,150, the UN reported early this week. The actual number is probably much higher, as many places are inaccessible and it sometimes takes a long time to get a death officially confirmed. More than 20,000 civilians have died in devastated Mariupol alone, according to the city government.
