Police fire in the air at protest against military mobilization in Russia | Abroad

In the Dagestani village of Endirej, protesters blocked a street to prevent authorities from entering, according to the website of civil rights organization OVD-Info. The protest was in response to the fact that 110 men from the village have been summoned to fight in Ukraine, local media reported. Since the announcement last week of a partial mobilization in Russia’s war against Ukraine, protests have taken place across the country.

Dagestan, which is mainly inhabited by ethnic Muslims, is one of the Russian regions where the most men are currently being drafted, according to observers. Activists argue that especially members of minorities are the target of the Russian mobilization campaign.

Protests are also taking place in Makhachkala, the capital of the Autonomous Republic of Dagestan. Images on social media show how protesters clash with the police.
