Police find empty building during eviction of squatted hotel in Amsterdam Center

No squatters were found during the eviction of the squatted former hotel on Plantage Middenlaan in the center of Amsterdam. The squatters were told by the police yesterday that they had to leave. The key to the property is returned to the owner.

The police informed the squatters yesterday that they were no longer allowed to spend the night in the building, because the owner of the building has made a report. As a result of that report, it was decided that the premises must be evicted. The police gave the squatters the opportunity to leave the empty hotel last night.

The squatters have been in the former hotel Rembrandt since this week. It would be ‘homeless students of Autonomous Student Struggle’, wrote activists who are active under the name anarchafamsterdam on Instagram. The squatters are said to have occupied the building near Artis because the hotel has been empty for over a year.

protest last night

Because of last night’s decision by the police to vacate the property, the squatters organized a protest. Among other things, they played music and lit a smoke pot. At around 9.45 pm, the squatters decided to block the road. As a result, motorists could not pass through and the tram also came to a halt. At 10.10 p.m., the activists left the street.
