Police: emergency services pelted with fireworks, but ‘no major disturbances’ in Drenthe

There were no major disturbances in Drenthe during New Year’s Eve. The police reported this this morning. However, it was restless in Assen and Eelde, where police officers and firefighters were pelted with fireworks.

According to the police, fires, fireworks nuisance and vandalism have been reported in Drenthe. Four people have been arrested.

The police were present in Eelde for “some time”. Officers were pelted with fireworks at that time. “Eventually, peace returned,” the police wrote.

On the Schultestraat in Assen “it was restless during the evening and night when it comes to fires on the street”. While extinguishing the fire, the fire brigade was pelted with fireworks. “Eventually, peace returned there too.”

A total of fourteen arrests were made in the Northern Netherlands during New Year’s Eve. The most excesses were in Groningen, where the riot police had to intervene in Hoogkerk and Bedum. Heavy fireworks exploded in Midwolda, causing damage to homes. There were also two fatal collisions in Oldehove and Oude Pekela and someone was stabbed in the city of Groningen.

Just like in Drenthe, there were no major disturbances in Friesland, the police reported.

All in all, the police speak of a New Year’s Eve with “a number of intense events” in the Northern Netherlands.
